Sleep. When you’re a child and forced to take naps you hate it, when you’re an adult and you don’t have the time, you crave for it. It’s truly a conundrum, and one that we can’t solve. But, what we can solve is how well we can sleep! Specifically, what kind of beds you sleep on and what kind of sheets you use.
First off, let’s talk about mattresses.
There’s mainstream brands like Tempur, King Coil, Simmons and Maxcoil, but there’s also smaller up-and-coming brands like Noa, Woosa, Haylee and Hipvan. Although name brands have more clout because of their years in the industry and established branding, in the new age of media, smaller bedding brands have also slowly gained traction due to social media.
Pillow-Top Mattresses
For a more luxurious sleep experience, you can go for pillow-top mattresses. A pillow-top mattress usually has inner springs/coils to provide a firm bounce, and has a top padded layer sewn on to it for extra comfort. This mattress is great because it provides the firm support we need for good back support, yet also retains a high level of comfort from the extra padding that is laid on top of the mattress.
Gel-Infused Mattresses
As Singapore’s weather is pretty warm, it is a good idea to consider gel-infused foam mattresses as an alternative. Gel-infused mattresses are known to be very comfortable and are more breathable. Breathability is great for users who may feel that their mattresses trap too much heat when they are using it. The gel infused mattress encourages your body heat to escape rather than trap it within the mattress. Additionally, the springs on the mattress recoil back to their normal shape faster, and if you move more in your sleep, the mattress will not stay compressed for too long after you have moved off from it.
Memory Foam
Everyone knows about memory foam mattresses and probably at some point wanted to get one due to the hype several years ago. The popularity of memory foam mattresses comes from its ability to ‘remember’ your body shape. The foam is able to reduce tossing and turning at night, and distributes your body weight evenly to allow for more comfortable support. Though it remains as a popular choice today, sentiments have shifted about its efficacy in providing that luxurious night’s rest that we all crave.
And now moving on to our favourite bedding.
Having a well-made mattress is important, but having great bedding layered on the most comfortable mattress will elevate your entire sleep experience.
In the past 3 years there have been small home brands that have gained a strong following for retailing quality beddings produced in small batches, made of high-quality fabrics. These brands have capitalised on social media’s appeal and the ease of promoting a luxurious lifestyle that won’t hurt your pocket. There are well known luxury bedding brands like Beaumont & Brown, St Regis Boutique and Ploh which have carved out formidable reputations in providing luxury beddings for hotels and homes alike. But for this case, we will be discussing more on smaller home brands that have made a dent in the bedding industry as well. An added bonus – these small brands place a bigger emphasis on sustainability in the production process which is also better for the environment!
Linen bedding
Linen not only makes for breathable summer clothes, but long lasting and high quality beddings too. According to local linen bedding brand; Home With Annette, linen is 30% stronger than cotton fibres. Therefore, linen beddings that are made of top-quality flax fibres and cared for properly gets better over time. So, the more you use, the softer and more luxurious it will feel. Linen bedding is perfect for our tropical climate because it is also breathable and has the ability to stay cool all night. Beddings made from linen are also more environmentally friendly as it requires less resources to produce, and leftover materials from the plant can be turned into linseed oil.
Cotton bedding
Cotton is probably the most common fabric used for bedding. However, typical cotton beddings are not made with durability, aesthetics and comfort in mind. Sojao is a local cotton bedding brand that offers GOTS-certified cotton materials in all their products. The organic cotton crops take a longer time to be harvested and turned into bedding materials, but result in better quality sheets. Sojao also believes in working with manufacturers that don’t exploit their workers, and work hard to ensure that their manufacturing and company practices are sustainable and not harmful to the environment.
Bamboo bedding
Yes, bamboo can be turned into bedding too. Bamboo textiles are more sustainable than other common textile materials like cotton. Sunday Bedding’s bamboo sateen comes in sheets, pillow covers and duvet covers too. Bamboo sateen feels smooth and silky against your skin and comes with a natural sheen as well. The sheets are made to be of high quality, long lasting and low maintenance. So, if you enjoy a little natural sheen on your bedding, you can get these to add a little shine to your mornings.
Lately, a hot topic in our office has been that we are all not getting enough rest. Maybe investing in a better mattress and getting high quality beddings will help us afford the luxury of sleep. If it doesn’t, at least we will have a luxurious mattress and really smooth and comfortable sheets to lay in as we toss and turn in bed.
